COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will the Hill Topper fit my bike?

There are many different bicycles and adult tricycles on the road today, but the Hill Topper has been carefully designed to fit as many of these models as possible. There are two factors used to confirm that the Hill Topper will fit your bike. 1) We need to know your wheel size. This can be found on the side of the tire that is already on your bike.

This is a 26in wheel
A 26 inch wheel

2) We need to confirm that the motorized hub will fit into the fork on your bike. “The fork” is the two metal arms that hold either side of your front wheel. If there is about 3.9” or more between the ends of your fork, the Hill Topper will fit!

How fast will it go?

“Top speed” will always be an estimate, since it depends on the bike, wheel size, rider, and terrain; not just the kit. That being said, the average top speed of the 24V/250W Hill Topper is about 15 mph (24 kph) without pedaling on flat ground. Our 36V/350W system tops out closer to 20 mph (32 kph)

How far can I go on one battery charge? What is the range?

Giving a range-rating to a battery involves a lot of variables, such as terrain, weight, rolling resistance, rider, and even things like weather or bike maintenance. To reduce the influence of these factors, we tested all of our batteries under the most neutral conditions available.

We put our 170lb rider and our 30lb test-bike on flat terrain and held the button down. With a full charge and without any pedaling we measured the distance that the kit could go under its own power. Under these conditions the 12-mile sprinter kit, for example, would take you 12 miles, but assuming that you pedal your bike and use it intermittently, it will likely last you much longer!

Our Current battery offerings, and the distance ratings that they achieved are:

The Economy: 8 Miles, 24V, 7Ah, 5lbs, LiFePo4, 6"x6"x4.5"

The Sprinter: 12 Miles, 24V, 6.6Ah, 3lbs, NiCoMn, 2.5"x3"x8"

The Commuter: 20 Miles, 24V, 10Ah, 4.5lbs, NiCoMn, 3"x5"x8"

The Ranger: 20 Miles, 36V, 7Ah, 7.5lbs, LiFePo4, 6”x4”x11”

How long will the battery last?

Typically most Hill Topper customers get approximately 1-2 years of battery life, but this varies depending on usage. Your specific conditions will affect your battery performance and life.

Factors to consider include how steep your hills are, how much weight is loaded on your bicycle, bicycle type, tire inflation, rider strength and riding style, will all effect how hard your battery has to work.

This video has several helpful tips on how to get the most out of your Hill Topper:

Will the Hill Topper wheel work with my tire? Can I use my own tire?

Yes, the Hill Topper wheel will work with nearly any bicycle tire.

Each Hill Topper is sent with a standard hybrid-style tire and tube ready to be inflated and used. However, if you prefer, they can be removed and replaced with nearly any other tire and tube of your choosing. This is a fairly simple task, but your local bike shop can help you if you prefer not to do it yourself.

The Hill Topper wheel will work with tires that are at minimum 0.9" (23mm) and a maximum of 2.5" (64mm) wide.

How powerful is the Hill Topper? Will it work on my hill?

The Hill Topper kits utilize a powerful motor running at 250 or 350 Watts. What does that mean? Well, it is like having another fit bicycle rider helping you pedal, but without their weight. No matter how hard your hills, or heavy your bike is, this motor will always work to help you get where you need to go without becoming fatigued.

Just as long as you continue to pedal, the Hill Topper motor will help you top even the toughest of hills or your long ride to work. You get the advantage of another bicycle rider, but with less spandex and sweat!

Grip Switch v.s. Twist Throttle. Can I control my speed with the on/off grip switch?

Yes. While the grip switch for our 250W kit has only on/off settings; how much you pedal, what kind of terrain you are riding over, and several other factors will influence how fast you go. Not going fast enough? Pedal just a little harder, and it will feel like the motor is doubling your effort! Going too fast? Just let up on the button for a while. Our kit is designed with simplicity, practicality and cost in mind. After researching how people use products with a throttle, we found that a large percent use a throttle the same way they would use an on/off button, so we chose the simplest solution.

Our 350W/36V kit comes with a variable-speed throttle due to its higher top-speed and increased power.

Do you have a 20 or 16 inch wheel Hill Topper kit?

We do have 20 inch wheels available for both our 24v 350W, and 36v 350W kits. While we don't have a 16 inch Hill Topper at this time, we do have a solution for you.

Our ProPack bike shop kit is a perfect option for those that need a custom wheel size. Simply take the ProPack hub motor to your local bike shop, and they will build your custom sized wheel for a small fee. Typically a bike shop will charge $60-80 for labor for a wheel build, but check with your bike shop for exact rates.

Do I need a steel fork to use the 'Hill Topper' kit?

This is an excellent question and a common concern.

The bottom line is that it is best to use a steel fork with any electric motor for it's rigidness and durability. Any fork used that is not steel does pose the risk of cracking, bending of breaking in some manner. The frame of the bike is less important than the fork (where your front wheel goes). If you can swap out your front fork, or have a local bike shop do it, this is generally recommended.

With that said, we have many customers who use their Hill Topper with an aluminum or carbon fiber fork. While we don't recommend this, many of our customers ride their Hill Topper equipped bikes using non-steel forks safely. If a customer does choose to use the Hill Topper with a fork made of any material other than steel, at the very least regularly check the fork for any cracking or bending before riding.

If you own our 36v/350W Ranger kit, a steel fork is required.

Do I have to pedal when I use the Hill Topper?

We strongly recommend that you pedal while using your Hill Topper.

Pedaling allows you to get the most out of your Hill Topper kit and maximize your battery performance. The motor can work without pedaling, but operating the kit without pedaling for extended periods will greatly reduce your battery life.

Please watch this video on how to get the most out of your Hill Topper and maximize your battery performance:

HUB Motor

Is there any resistance from the motor when I'm pedaling?

There is no forward rolling resistance in our wheels. Our motor has a freewheel bearing so you are not using any of your own energy to move internal parts of the motor while it is not engaged.

How much does the motor weigh?

Our 24V motors weigh 6 lbs, and our 36V motors weigh 7 lbs.

What type of hub motor does CR use?

We use a planetary DC brushless hub motor, weighing six pounds (for the 24V motor) or 7 pounds (for the 36V motor)..

Video of the internal parts:

Will I damage the motor by putting too much stress on it (going up a steep hills or a very heavy rider)?

Our motors are very robust, and can endure quite a lot of weight and/or stress.

Do I need to use a torque arm with the CR hub motor?

No, our motor is safe to use without a torque arm. For our 36v/350W Ranger kit, however, we do require a steel fork.

How tight should I make the hub bolts?

Make sure that your hub bolts are tight. Hand-tighten the bolts and then make sure that they are snugged with a wrench before riding you Hill Topper.

The hub will not fit into my front drop outs.

DISC BRAKES

Are the CR kits compatible with disc brakes?

Yes. Click here for more info

What is the minimum rotor size that is compatible with the CR hub?

160mm rotor.

Will my disc brake caliper fit between my forks and the CR wheel spokes?

Bicycle disc brakes are well-standardized, and we encounter exceptionally few clearance issues. If you are having clearance trouble with your Hill Topper, your local bike shop can make sure that your brake is adjusted properly. The distance from a disc-brake rotor mounted to our motor to the outermost of our spokes is 18mm at its closest point.

What type of disc brake works best with the CR Hill Topper kit?

We recommend that, when using disc brakes, you use the same size and model as originally provided with your bike from the manufacturer. Clean Republic hubs are compatible with standard (I.S.) 6-bolt disc-brake rotors. We do not sell or provide brake rotors with our wheels.

Will the included cable set be long enough for my bike?

Our cable set is made of two separate cables joined to each other at the battery connector. These cables both start at the battery and run independently to the grip switch on your handlebars, and the hub motor at the center of your front wheel. Our standard cable set measures 54” (137cm) from the battery connector to the grip switch, and 70” (178cm) from the battery connector to the hub motor connector. This is long enough to accommodate the vast majority of our customers, but if you think that you may need a custom-made cable you can contact our sales department at 1-855-743-3279 for further consultation.

What tools will I need to install the Hill Topper?

For our 24v 250W kits, you will need a 15mm wrench. If you do not have one, a 5/8" wrench will work, but a 15mm is recommended. Also available for our 24v 250W kits is our axle quick release device.

Does pedaling recharge the battery?

You are not recharging the battery when you are pedaling, as this would take about 3 times as much energy as it takes to ride your bike normally, as well as increase the cost and complexity of the system.

What is the battery range?

The Economy: 8 Miles, 24V, 7Ah, LiFePo4, 5lbs, 6"x6"x4.5"

The Sprinter: 12 Miles, 24V, 6.6Ah, 3lbs, NiCoMn, 2.5"x3"x8"

The Commuter: 20 Miles, 24V, 10Ah, 4.5lbs, NiCoMn, 3"x5"x8"

The Ranger: 20 Miles, 36V, 7Ah, 7.5lbs, LiFePo4, 6”x4”x11”

How long does it take to charge the Hill Topper battery?

It takes 5 hours to charge both the 20-Mile Commuter battery and the 36V Ranger battery, and 3 hours to charge both the 12-Mile Sprinter and 8-Mile Economy battery.

What voltage range can I use to charge the battery?

The charger for our 24v batteries is rated at: INPUT 120-240 volts AC, 50/60HZ. OUTPUT DC 29 volts @ 2.0 Amps.

The charger for our 36v batteries is rated at: INPUT 120-240 volts AC, 50/60HZ. OUTPUT DC 43.8 volts @ 2.0 Amps.

What is the difference between the various battery packs?

All of our battery packs are Lithium-Ion batteries which use the latest in advanced battery technology. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in most portable electronics today (Smart phones, laptop computers), and offer high energy capacity in a smaller, more lightweight package.

Our 12-Mile Sprinter battery and our 20-Mile Commuter battery are Lithium Cobalt Manganese (NCM) batteries. NCM chemistry is some of the lightest and highest capacity on the market today. The Economy and Ranger battery packs are also lithium, but use a different battery chemistry known as Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4). LiFePO4 batteries are a more affordable option, but do come at the cost of increased size and weight. See below for side-by-side comparison of our battery packs.

The Economy: 8 Miles, 24V, 7Ah, LiFePo4, 5lbs, 6"x6"x4.5"

The Sprinter: 12 Miles, 24V, 6.6Ah, 3lbs, NiCoMn, 2.5"x3"x8"

The Commuter: 20 Miles, 24V, 10Ah, 4.5lbs, NiCoMn, 3"x5"x8"

The 40-Mile Elite Twinpack is made up of two 20-mile Commuter Lithium battery packs.

The Ranger: 20 Miles, 36V, 7Ah, 7.5lbs, LiFePo4, 6”x4”x11”

How do I know when the battery is fully charged?

The LED on the battery CHARGER will turn from red to green.

How do I ship my Lithium battery back to Clean Republic?

In order to comply with DOT regulations, Clean Republic's Lithium batteries are required to ship via sturdy, specially-marked boxes. For more details click here.

The small set screws on my chrome plug have fallen out. How and where can I get replacement screws?

We can send you screws by mail but it is a lot faster and cheaper to go to Radio Shack or buy your own at the local hardware store.

How should I store my battery?

Store in a cool dry place. You should fully charge your battery before storing it. If you are storing it for an extended period of time, check that it is charged up at a regular interval.

How do I get the longest battery life out of my lithium battery?

Lithium batteries should be 'topped off' after each use. For longest battery life do not fully discharge the battery and do not over-charge. Disconnect the charger when the battery is fully charged. Remember that over the long term the battery has a limited number of cycles. One cycle is a complete charge and discharge.

RANGE & SPEED

How to get the most out of your Hill Topper:

How do I increase the speed of my Hill Topper kit?

Use a thinner tire. Thinner tires cause less friction with the ground, and as a result have less rolling risistance.

Use a lighter bike. This will decrease how hard the kit has to work, and as a result, increase how fast it will go.

Increase your wheel size. The RPM of the motor will be the same, but each rotation of the wheel will cover more distance.

How can I get the best battery performance and range?

Your specific conditions will affect your range. Factors like how steep your hills are, how much weight is loaded on your bicycle, bicycle type, tire inflation, rider strength and riding style, will all effect how far you will go. The 8-mile, 12-mile or 20-mile range is a general guideline of what to expect, but your results may vary a little bit.

To maximize your battery performance and range:

-Most importantly: Pedal while the motor is on.

-Start the motor after the bike is moving

-Use the motor to mainly climb hills

-Don't use the motor while going downhill or when you feel you don't need it

WHEEL & LACING

What does 700c mean?

700c is a designation of bicycle wheel size. It is one of the most common and popular wheel sizes, seen mostly on road and hybrid bikes. The majority of modern bikes have wheel sizes of 700c or 26”. Some bike frames can accommodate different sizes of wheels. If your bike has a wheel size other than the ones we offer (700c, 26”, or 24”), we recommend consulting with your local bike shop to see if one of our wheel sizes is compatible with your frame.

How much does the Hill Topper wheel weigh?

The 250 Watt Hill Topper wheel weighs about 10 pounds, regardless of wheel size, since most of the weight resides in the hub. The 350 Watt wheel weighs slightly more, coming in at about 11 pounds.

What is the largest spoke that will fit the CR 'Hill Topper' hub?

12 gauge.

What is the smallest spoke gauge I can use with the CR hub and wheel?

14 gauge.

What spoke gauge does CR use and why?

We use 13 gauge spokes which are heavier-duty than standard spokes. We do this to help compensate for the extra stress that a motorized hub can put on a wheel.

I am lacing my own wheel how much tension should I put on the spokes?

We check the tension on our spokes using the Park Tools TM-1 Tension Meter. On the disk-mount side of the hub, tension should register 24-29 on the TM-1, and 20-25 on the cable side using 13-gauge spokes. For more information about spoke tension and Park Tool tension readings, visit this site.

What lacing pattern does CR use and recommend?

For our wheels, we use a standard 2-cross lacing pattern.

Will a different lacing pattern give me more room for spoke clearance when installing my disc brake?

No. We have very few problems with disc brake compatibility, and do not recommend altering your lacing pattern based on caliper-clearance concerns.

Can I lace my CR hub motor with a different pattern?

Yes, please check out this link for further information

If I'm building my own wheel (Pro Pack Option), how long should my spokes be?

Spoke length depends on three factors: your hub, your rim, and your lacing pattern. Here is a link to a spoke-length calculator: https://leonard.io/edd/

Instructions:
For the “Hub” category on the left, click the “enter your own measurements” button at the top. Input the following dimensions to calculate spoke lengths for the Clean Republic Hill Topper Electric motor hub (measurements in Millimeters):

Left Flange: 120
Right Flange: 120
Center to left flange: 16.5
Center to right flange: 29
Spoke Hole: 2.5

NOTE: Clean Republic uses 13 gauge spokes for all of our wheels.

Our standard warranty covers your battery for 1 year, and the rest of your kit for 2 years. Our extended 2-year warranty covers all non-battery components for a total of 4 years.

How do I get the longest battery life out of my lithium battery?

Lithium batteries should be 'topped off' after each use. For longest battery life do not fully discharge the battery and do not over charge. Disconnect the charger when the battery is fully charged. Remember that over the long term the battery has a limited number of cycles. One cycle is a complete charge and discharge.

How much does the warranty cost?

The standard warranty is included in the purchase price. If you would like the additional 2-year warranty it is available for $29.00.

Why isn't the battery performance covered in the long-term warranty?

The batteries are rated at 400 cycles for the Economy and 500 cycles for the Sprinter and Commuter. This means they are covered by the manufacturer for 400 and 500 complete chargers and discharges respectively, but customers' usage patterns vary too widely for us to cover all situations.
