COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will the Hill Topper fit my bike?

Yes! The Hill Topper was designed to fit 95% of bicycles and adult tricycles on the road today. You can double check two things to be sure.

First, we will need your wheel size. This can be found printed on the side of your tire.

This is a 26in wheel
A 26 inch wheel

Secondly, the Hill Topper motor will need to fit in your bicycle fork(the two metal pieces that attach the front wheel to the bicycle). You will need at least 3.9 inches (100mm), about the same size as the long end of a business card, between the forks blades at the dropouts (where the wheel axle connects to the bike). Nearly all bikes have enough room for the Hill Topper motor to fit in between the fork blades.

How far can I go on one battery charge? What is the range?

We have several battery options that can suit your personal needs and commute length. The Economy battery will take you 8-miles, whereas the Lithium Sprinter battery will take you 10-miles and both charge in 2 1/2 hours, but the Lithium Sprinter only weighs 2.5lbs, versus 11lbs for the Economy. The 20-Mile Lithium battery will take you 20-miles and charge in 5 hours. The 40-mile Elite Twinpack has a 40-mile range and is made up of two 20-mile battery packs.

Your specific conditions will affect your range. Factors like how steep your hills are, how much weight is loaded on your bicycle, bicycle type, tire inflation, rider strength and riding style, will all effect how far you will go. The 8-mile, 10-mile or 20-mile range is a general guideline of what to expect, but your results may vary a little bit.

How powerful is the Hill Topper? Will it work on my hill?

The Hill Topper utilizes a powerful 250 Watt motor. What does that mean? Well, it is like having another fit bicycle rider helping you pedal, but without their weight. No matter how hard your hills, or heavy your bike is, this motor will always work to help you get where you need to go without becoming fatigued.

Just as long as you continue to pedal, the Hill Topper motor will help you top even the toughest of hills or your long ride to work. You get the advantage of another bicycle rider, but with less spandex and sweat!

Grip Switch v.s. Twist Throttle. Can I control my speed with the on/off grip switch?

Yes, you can quite easily. Our kit is designed with simplicity, practicality and cost in mind. After research into how people use products that have a throttle we found that a large percent use them either on or off therefor we choose this switch type.

Do you have a 20 or 16 inch wheel Hill Topper kit?

While we don't have a 20 or 16 inch Hill Topper at this time, we do have a solution for you.

Our ProPack bike shop kit is a perfect option for those that need a custom wheel size. Simply take the ProPack hub motor to your local bike shop, and they will build your custom sized wheel for a small fee. Typically a bike shop will charge $60-80 for labor for a wheel build, but check with your bike shop for exact rates.

Do I need a steel fork to use the 'Hill Topper' kit?

This is an excellent question and a common concern.

The bottom line is that it is best to use a steel fork with any electric motor for it's rigidness and durability. Any fork used that is not steel does pose the risk of cracking, bending of breaking in some manner. The frame of the bike is less important than the fork (where your front wheel goes). If you can swap out your front fork, something a local bike shop can easily do, this is generally recommended.

With that said, we have many customers who use their Hill Topper with an aluminum or carbon fiber fork. While we don't recommend this, many of our customers ride their Hill Topper equipped bikes using non-steel forks safely. If a customer does choose to use the Hill Topper with a fork made of any material other than steel, at the very least regularly check the fork for any cracking or bending before riding.

Do I have to pedal when I use the Hill Topper?

We strongly recommend that you pedal while using your Hill Topper.

Pedaling allows you to get the most out of your Hill Topper kit and maximize your battery performance. The motor can work without pedaling, but operating the kit without pedaling for extended periods will greatly reduce your battery life.

Does pedaling recharge the battery?

You are not recharging the battery when you are pedaling, as this would take about 3 times as much energy as it takes to ride your bike normally, as well as increase the cost and complexity of the system.

What is the battery range?

The range is 8 miles for the Economy battery kit and 10 or 20 miles for the Lithium battery kits. We also offer a 40-mile Elite Twinpack, made up of two 20-mile Lithium batteries.

What is the difference between the Lithium batteries and the Economy battery?

Lithium batteries use the latest in advanced battery technology. Commonly found in most portable electronics today (Smart phones, laptop computers), Lithium batteries offer high energy capacity in a smaller, more light-weight package.
The Economy battery is also a Lithium battery, but uses a different battery chemistry, LiFePO4, also known as Lithium Iron Phosphate. LiFePO4 batteries, are a more affordable option, but do come at the cost of size and weight. Please click on the battery links below for detailed information.

How do I know when the battery is fully charged?

We can send you screws by mail but it is a lot faster and cheaper to go to Radio Shack or buy your own at the local hardware store.

How should I store my battery?

Store in a cool dry place. You should fully charge your battery before storing it. If you are storing it for an extended period of time, check that it is charged up at a regular interval.

How do I get the longest battery life out of my lithium battery?

Lithium batteries should be 'topped off' after each use. For longest battery life do not fully discharge the battery and do not over charge. Disconnect the charger when the battery is fully charged. Remember that over the long term the battery has a limited number of cycles. One cycle is a complete charge and discharge.

WHEEL & LACING

What does 700c mean?

In the bicycle world 700c is synonymous with 28". In actual size it is a little smaller than a 28" wheel and a little bigger than a 27".

What is the combined weight of the wheel and hub motor?

10lbs.

What is the largest spoke that will fit the CR 'Hill Topper' hub?

12 gauge.

What is the smallest spoke gauge I can use with the CR hub and wheel?

14 gauge.

What spoke gauge does CR use and why?

13 gauge because the thickness is needed for the torque stresses.

I am lacing my own wheel how much torque should I put on the spokes?

All CR wheels have a spoke tension of approximately 173Kgf (1730N or 380lbf) We recommend a minimum spoke tension of 120Kgf (1200N or 264lbf)

What lacing pattern does CR use and recommend?

2 cross and 2 cross with all the spoke heads facing out on the left side for the disc brake compatible option.

Will a different lacing pattern give me more room for spoke clearance when installing my disc brake?

Yes, you can use a radial lace on the left side with all the spoke heads facing out of your wheel (the side your disc brake is on) and a 2 cross lacing pattern on the other side or you can use a 2 cross pattern on both sides with all the spoke heads out on the left side and alternating in and out on the right side.

Can I lace my CR hub motor with a different pattern?

Yes, please check out this link for further information

What length spokes do I need for lacing my wheel?

700c wheels need 259mm spokes. 26" wheels need 229mm spokes and 24" wheels need 203mm spokes.

If I buy a Pro Pack and choose the 'No Spokes' option, how long will the spokes I purchase need to be cut?

This depends on the size of wheel you want to lace the hub motor into and the lacing pattern that you use. Please ask your local bike shop or look online for a measurement tool. Keep in mind that CR uses 13 gauge spokes on all of its wheel builds and also ships 13 gauge spokes if requested with the Pro Pack kits.

WARRANTY

What is covered in the standard 1-year and extended 2-year CR warranty?

All parts are covered except the battery performance. If there is a quality problem with the battery pack itself, then that is covered under the warranty, but battery range performance can depend on many factors unique to the user's situation and outside our control.

How much does the warranty cost?

The 1 year warranty is included in the purchase price. If you would like the additional 2-year warranty it is available for $29.00.

Why isn't the battery performance covered in the long-term warranty?

The batteries are rated at 400 cycles for the Economy and 500 cycles for the lithium. This means they are covered by the manufacturer for 400 and 500 complete chargers and discharges respectively but customers' usage patterns vary too widely for us to cover all situations since some people work their batteries much harder than others.
