Meet The Team

Michael Shope

CEO & Co-Founder

My job here:

Coordinating operations, planning ahead for future fun, leading the Mad Science Team.

Why I love Clean Republic

Here I have the freedom to match my daily work to my personal interest in alternative energy and effecting positive social changes in the world. Philosophizing and creative dreaming are necessary for progress, but if an equal amount of energy spent there was simply put into the less romantic but more rewarding work of using standard business models we already have available today, administered for everyone's benefit, the world could quickly become a much better place, without as much waiting.

Me & My bicycles

I had much fun playing with bikes when growing up. Now I use my bike for commuting and utility, rather than sports. I use a car for big errands, but other than that I'm outside the 3,000-lb carapace, generating many "negawatts" on my bike in comparison.

Current ride(s):

REI Novara brand commuter with Hill-Topper 12-mile Lithium sprinter battery.

Beau Morton

Sales & Marketing Manager

My job here:

Interacting with customers through phone and emails; marketing/web campaign projects.

Why I love Clean Republic

It’s a fast-growing company. Compared to my old lock-down corporate jobs, I spend every day re-discovering ways to better understand and serve customers’ needs.

Me & My bicycles

I’ve always liked riding bicycles since I was a kid. I feel it’s the best way to get around Seattle.

Current ride(s):

I take whatever bike that is donated to me by friends and run it to the ground. Right now I have a 1990 specialized Rock-Hopper.

Adam Blumenthal

Operations Manager

My job here:

Most days I feel I’m wearing an “Octopus Hat” with sinewy tentacles reaching into 8 different directions at any given time. One minute I may be writing payroll or recording banking transactions, the next I could be following up with our latest printing and graphic design needs. I am also found simultaneously keeping tabs on product inventory, writing the latest purchase orders and sourcing said products. So yeah, I’m an octopus-hat-wearing-juggler of fiery bicycle wheels churning company cash (who also keeps us from running out of coffee or toilet paper).

Why I love Clean Republic

My days are always very diverse and challenging; even so, I’m able to maintain a great work/life balance. Our team is a wonderful, multi-talented and motley bunch that has an awesome chemistry. We have tons of fun while getting the job done. Plus, I believe in our products; clean energy products that support my desire to get more people riding bikes, to be less dependent on cars and to see our energy use in a new light.

Me & My bicycles

I am a reformed racer with 10+ years in the bicycle retail world including management stints at REI and Trek, plus some time behind the scenes at Novara. My partner and I currently have 8 bicycles in our tiny garage; this quiver supports all styles of riding, especially one that allows our shared car to remain parked most of the time. Bikes are a lifelong love affair for me and I don’t see that changing... ever.

Current ride(s):

1. Custom steel Monster-Cross bike w/hydraulic disc brakes, internal 3-sp hub and tubeless wheelset 2. Waltworks Bicycles custom True Temper steel 29er SS 3. Old, unknown brand, fixed gear road bike with fenders, flat bars and Wald wire basket (daily driver/commuter); 4. Jamis Team Eclipse road bike (’95), currently set up in SS configuration with fenders; 5. Soma Grand Randonneur (’14) with 650b wheels, generator hub running front/rear lighting system, stainless fenders and Swift Industries' Ozette bag on a front mini rack. Think “long distance-any road” machine. 6. Xtracycle Cargo Bike running a Hill Topper Kit w/20 mile “Commuter” lithium battery pack for easy haulin’!

Kami Madison

Seattle Shop Manager

My job here:

I manage the Production Team here in the Seattle shop. We do the actual production and shipping of most products, along with the some of the pre-release (R&D, troubleshooting) and post-sales (technical support) tasks on these same products.

Why I love Clean Republic

I remember falling in love with Clean Republic the first time I walked into the shop in May of 2013. I came in with my delivery-by-bicycle and was immediately intrigued by what I saw. I had basic bike knowledge combined with some electrical experience, but mostly I already had a dream in my heart of more people on bikes. I made my desire to be a part of the team known (maybe a little too eagerly!), and joined officially in September as a Production Specialist. These days, I still love it! My coworkers are a wonderful, powerful group of forward-thinking individuals, and we get to constantly improve the ways we work and the space we work in.

Me & My bicycles

I started riding around the neighborhood when I was pretty young. When I got my first job, it was a 16-mile round trip and I couldn't afford a car, so I got back on the saddle and never left for long. Since Jan. 2012, I have put down approximately 30,000+ miles bicycling.

Current ride(s):

People seem to like to steal my bikes, so I tend to just go with what fits for me at the time. ;) Currently that's a Diamondback Insight 1, I fixed her up after buying her used and she's been a well-fitting, reliable commuter thus far.

Mark Thomas-Farm

Technical Support Lead & In-Store Sales

My job here:

My job is trouble shooting customer issues, analyzing battery performance, repairing damaged motors and batteries, as well as Seattle in store sales. I also help with production as robot commander and dabble in R&D.

Why I love Clean Republic

I love Clean Republic because of all of the fun new things I have been able to learn about in my time here. It is great to work in an industry I care about. Helping people get back on their bikes is a rewarding way to use my bicycle knowledge for work.

Me & My bicycles

I have been pretty enthusiastic about bikes since 2007 when my friends introduced me to the fixie craze. Since then my love of bikes has extended to most varieties of two wheeled fun. Over the years I went from bike kid, to delivering by bike, and then a few years as a bicycle mechanic before being recruited by Clean Republic.

Current ride(s):

I have a whole fleet currently, some may say too many, but you know the rule: n+1. The bike I have been favoring is my All-City Def Wish, the 29er SS/FGFS built for fun on the dirt and road.

Ilana Kalmbach

Production Specialist

My job here:

I get to spend my days building wheels, assembling batteries, and getting Hill Topper kits and our other awesome products out to folks all over the world. I also assist with technical support and get to do R&D for future Clean Republic projects.

Why I love Clean Republic

I love working with an excellent team of passionate people who are always improving our company and our products. I also enjoy getting to learn all sorts of new things about how bicycles, batteries and other alternative energy products work.

Me & My bicycles

I grew up riding bikes around the neighborhood with my brother. A little later, I got really into cyclocross racing (what's more fun than getting to ride your bike through mud and over obstacles?). Now I use my bike mostly for more functional things--I'm an every day bike commuter and use my ride all the time for errands. I do still get out for fun too and love exploring Seattle by bike.

Current ride(s):

Right now I ride a well-loved Scattante road bike. To me, its most important component is my favorite orange handlebar tape.

Ben Lewis

Production Specialist

My job here:

When something is in pieces, I get to make it into a whole, whether that's building wheels of all sizes by the dozens, or redesigning and building our production table.

Why I love Clean Republic

We have a close-knit team, who work hard for a company that invests in its employees and believes in its products, and it's a huge breath of fresh air.

Me & My bicycles

My dad was and is a huge cycling enthusiast, but I didn't start following in his footsteps until I bought a Motobecane Mirage for $20 in 2008 and began teaching myself bicycle repair. I've been building, fixing, and riding bikes ever since.

Current ride(s):

Among my various half-built projects, I have a Raleigh Record Ace with a sweet piecemeal Shimano 600 groupset as my go-to ride. I only got rid of my trusty Motobecane last year when the head tube developed a crack. From too much love.

Robyn Ellis

Sales & Marketing Representative

My job here:

Being as generally helpful to the team as I can and answering customer questions in whatever form they come. Also making cookies.

Why I love Clean Republic

Clean Republic is a cooperative team made of great people actively working to be a part of the solution in sustainable energy. Every person out of a car and on a bike is a step in the right direction and CR breaks down barriers for people to make that change.

Me & My bicycles

Riding my bike means the world to me! I came to cycling as soon as I moved to Seattle in 2010 and now I ride all over the city for transportation and recreation. Over the last few years I have also done a fair amount of touring and have so far made my way 3,800 miles through 20 states.

Current ride(s):

I have a Co-Motion Co-Pilot tandem and a Bridgestone MB-6 but I mostly ride my Surly Long Haul Trucker. That is probably going to change once I finish transforming my Terra Tech Navigator into a commuter bike.

John Rice

Production Specialist

My job here:

Making the batteries that keep us all moving forward!

Why I love Clean Republic

This company is taking great strides towards a healthier planet. These bikes get people out on the road who may never have considered active transport before. And of course the awesome team members who have welcomed me into the fold.

Me & My bicycles

My first bike was one that my mom got used and fixed up for me. Since that first bike, I was hooked. While in Florida, I would travel down A1A next to the beach with other riders enjoying the sun. After moving to Panama, I would ride with my buddies to the beach or to the Amador Causeway to watch the ships pass through the canal. Now I live in North Dakota with no hills and can't ride all winter - not when it gets down to -40 anyhow.

Current ride(s):

Trek 4300 mountain bike

Jussi Lyons

Co-Owner, Investing Partner

My job here:

I draft marketing strategy, make management decisions and organizing social media platforms.

Why I love Clean Republic

In a way, CR expresses my frustration and disappointment in traditional corporation system. It is very stiff and it provides little effort to challenge conventional ways of life. Through CR, I want to improve the quality of life of our team members and at the same time build products that can make positive changes to our customers’ lives.

Me & My bicycles

I took off my first training wheels off when I was 6. After moving to Japan, I became more interested in road biking. The first time I rode a prototype Hill Topper in Seattle with Mike was a really fun moment.

Current ride(s):

Fixed gear Cannondale Capo with Hill Topper 12 mile Lithium Battery.

Ryan Ellison

Partner & Adviser

My job here:

Adviser in long term growth and strategies by providing an out side consultant's view of operations. Also assist with business activities.

Why I love Clean Republic

Being involved in Clean Republic from the start has been a very exciting and rewarding process. I see CR as one of the world's leaders in the "human friendly" approach, not only providing earth friendly products to our customers, but also a fun and visionary atmosphere for our employees.

Me & My bicycles

I have been biking since I was a small kid. In college (where I was a roommate with Mike) I became very active in endurance sports, biking being a small piece of that. Currently I have completed three RAGBRAI's and one Vätternrundan (A massive 300km bike race in Sweden).

Current ride(s):

Cannondale CAAD 8, Cannondale Six, BikeID city bike.

Me & My bicycles

Bicycles are fun to chase...

Current ride(s):

I dont have my own bicycle per-se, but I have a basket that lives on one of my dads bikes. I like to cruise around in there and feel the wind in my ears.
